Best Suburb in Sydney

by Sadegh

We are a couple and we are planning to move to Sydney during in the month of May. We just want to know what is the best suburb in Sydney to live in and to be suitable to us?

That is an excellent question with an extremely difficult reply. There are around 700 suburbs in Sydney and they all meet different needs.

It depends on what you want from your suburb:

  • to be close to the city;

  • to be close to your work place, which doesn't necessarily mean the city;

  • to be close to the beach, or close to the bush;

  • to have access to rail;

  • to have new houses or to have older, established, character homes;

  • to have medium or high density living, which means terraces, town houses and blocks of units or to have low density living, which means homes on 600 - 800 square metres with large back yards to entertain.

It also depends on your budget.

The general rule with finding a house is location, location, location.

The closer a suburb is to good transport options and to business hubs that can provide employment, the more facilities it has access to: shopping, schools, health and recreational, hospitals, the more demand for housing it will generate. This means the weekly rent and purchase prices will be higher.

Once you clarify your wants and budget, you will be able to narrow down your search to places that respond to your needs and you can start looking at various options available.

Go to the Rental Properties Sydney page and follow the steps described there to get a rough understanding of how rental prices work. Locate suburbs on the map available on that page.

You can find some very general information about the suburbs in Sydney and the roads that connect them at the Facts of Sydney Australia page. Check the names of the suburbs, enlarge the map and see which suburbs have rail transport.

As you are just starting out it would be good to have access to a rail line. It will make things easier for you and will help you get around more quickly, while you evaluate your options for the future.

We hope this answer will help you with your research.

700!? Plus the 'burbs worth inhabiting would be prob number less than 30.
Forget West. Avoid North & South as much as possible. Pay as little as you can out East. If still expensive, just stay as inner as possible in a circle from CBD. Don't go West past Glebe/Balmain.
