Peron Dunes in Tasmania

I read your articles about your trip in Tasmania and it looks amazing!

I have a question about Peron Dunes.

How do I get there? Do I need a 4wd to go there?

I would really appreciate your help because I am not sure if it's actually possible to go there driving 2wd car.

And also if the place is worth going to.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Yenny, thanks for your question.

You are right, we did enjoy our trip and saw amazing things. Tasmania is one place you need to visit multiple times to absorb all its beauty.

We did not use a 4 WD, we rented a Hyundui i20 which did the job perfectly all along the coast, including up to the Peron Dunes. We left the car just next to the sand dunes and then climbed a short distance to get to see the ocean and beaches from the top and had an excellent panoramic view. The dunes are low and rather easy to climb.

If you are more adventurous and want to drive on the sand then you do need a 4WD. The track is considered hard and recommended only to 4W drivers with good off-road experience. For all the more relaxed drivers who prefer the beaten track and are happy with just walking on the sand instead of driving, a standard, 2 wheel drive car will do.

To get there, from St Helens take the St Helens Point road and drive 13 km (about 10 – 15 minutes) to Peron Dunes. They are part of Saint Helens Point conservation area and are definitely worth a visit. You can enjoy the sweeping beaches, fishing, surfing, swimming or you can simply marvel at the rocks and boulders that arise from the sand or watch the marine birds.

Enjoy your trip. And please come back and drop a comment about your experience visiting Tasmania and the dunes.

  • Peron Dunes is located just outside of Cape Peron in Western Australia. To get there, you can take a car and drive along West Coast Highway for about 30 minutes until you reach the dunes. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Mandurah to Port Bouvard and then catch the local bus to Peron Dunes.
