555 Free Bus

I will be visiting Sydney in June of 2017. What can I see and do in Sydney? How can I get around Sydney without car? Is the Free Green bus still operating?

Your help is much appreciated,

Sidney Vu

Hi Sidney,

Thanks for your questions and interest in visiting Sydney.

June is an excellent month to visit this city. It is the beginning of winter and the weather is usually mild, cooler in the morning but the temperature can go up to 20 degrees C during the day, so nice and sunny to visit the city that is home to the famous Harbour Bridge, which you can climb and Opera House.

June is also the month of the Vivid Sydney festival with lights projected on the Opera and several other buildings around the Rocks. In 2017 the festival starts on 26 May and runs till 17 June. To see what the festival is about, read more about the 2016 festival here and on that page click on the links to the previous years.

You don't need a car to visit the best tourist spots. Most of them are in the heart of the city and it is fine to walk around.

Unfortunately the free 555 shuttle bus is not in service any longer. It stopped running in October 2015, when George Street was closed to traffic for the construction of the light rail infrastructure.

For the beach you can take the train to Bondi Junction and then a bus to the famous Bondi Beach. Another option is to take the ferry to go to Manly Beach.

For attractions further away, like the Blue Mountains (about 100 km from the city) or the wineries and beautiful gardens at Hunter Valley (about 160 km) you could book one day tours to each.

Please visit the Sydney and Sydney attractions pages to get some insights about what to do in the city.

Happy holidaying in Australia!
