For cut-price domestic flights, you can't get past Tiger Airways Australia. It is a young Singapore airline. It operates "Down Under" too, since November 2007. However the civil aviation safety authority grounded its flights in July 2011 for five weeks, to investigate safety issues following some incidents.

That was quite a blow for Tiger. The airline closed its base at the Adelaide airport and the Avalon airport in Melbourne and moved all its operations to Tullamarine, the international gate to Melbourne. It also reduced its fleet and the destinations served.

Before the suspension of its services in 2011, Tiger was flying to all our capital cities and some of the best locations and tourist attractions in this country, and it had built a reputation for low fares both in this country and in Asia.

be flexible with your travel dates and time and adjust them to match the lowest fares,
buy online,
and pack very light, hand luggage only.

Don't pack luggage to check in. If you can't and must take more stuff with you, then estimate how much you will carry and pay when booking. The online fees depend on the weight of your baggage. Ensure that the weight does not exceed the allowance you paid for. If it does, or if you forget to prepay for your suitcase, then the fee to check it in at the airport will be much higher.
