Foreign Exchange Market Updates

An Interview with Peter Lavelle - Part 1

Next: Part 2 - Transfer Funds to Australia

Looking for foreign exchange market updates? Interested to know more about Australian dollar exchange rates or how to transfer money overseas?

Peter Lavelle - economics writer

Peter Lavelle, an economics writer with UK based foreign exchange specialist PureFx, is here to help and answer your questions.

There is no crystal ball there, the money is moving up and down and a simple rumour can reverse a promising trend you were eagerly watching and hoping for.

But Peter is following the indicators, analysing the trends and writing financial comments to help you make an informed decision.

He has been writing news about Australian currency exchange for our readers for a while so we thought to ask him a few questions and get to know him better.

Peter, thank you for joining us today. Please tell us more about you. What do you do as an economics writer?

Being the economics writer at Pure FX I aim to give readers informative and entertaining updates on the foreign exchange market. For instance should the Federal Reserve raise interest rates or Britain declare membership of the euro (as if) I'd spell out the implications for the main currencies.

What makes you tick?

Intricate clockwork. To the delight of my friends I am easily wound up.

What did you do before starting to work for Pure FX?

I studied English Lit for a master's degree. I also did a lot of freelance writing - including for someone that supplies props to the film and TV industries!

Interesting... that's worlds apart from money stuff. So how exciting is it to analyse financial trends, write about currencies and exchange rates?

Exciting indeed. It's a bit of an ongoing game at Pure FX to guess what's going to happen on each release and the impact on the markets. On the writing side I aim to make it as entertaining as possible. I figure people look for information from newspapers so why shouldn't I spice things up?

How do you source the information for your articles?

I have a bunch of financial websites and official government sources I track. Most releases come from official sources so there's no secret here.

How do you work with the other team members at PureFx? How do they support you?

Regarding teamwork we're always talking about financial data in the office so it's collaborative in that sense. However there's a big emphasis on opinion so I am encouraged to make personal analyses too.

When you are not thinking about charts, trends and foreign exchange market updates, what do you like to do for fun?

I read a lot. I'm reading Don Quixote at the moment plus Atlas Shrugged. I go to the theatre and a lot of international movies too. This week I've seen Biutiful (from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu) which was quite downbeat. Last of all I see my friends as much as possible!
