Sydney Cityrail

The Cityrail brings many of the widespread Sydney suburbs closer.

Suburban trains are one of the best and fastest options of the Sydney public transport network.

The other options are:

The rail is reasonably good to commute from suburbs to the City or to other suburbs. But not all suburbs have trains.

  • There is no train to get you to the Hills area which has a growing population.

  • There is no rail to get you to the beaches. Cronulla beach is the only exception. Then there is the Bondi Junction station but you have to catch a bus to get to the famous Bondi Beach .

If you travel just around the city centre use the city circle rail. Some stations are underground, others above ground.

There are 7 stations that loop around the centre from Central to Circular Quay and up to Museum.

If you go to the suburbs use the other train lines. All of them have connections to the city circle.

Cityrail Lines

Going north and north west:

  • Northshore and Western lines connect Berowra in the north to Emu Plains in the west and Richmond in the north west. They extend further out to:
    • Gosford and then Newcastle on the Central Coast, and
    • Katoomba and Lithgow in the Blue Mountains.

  • Northern line links City to Epping and Hornsby.

  • Carlingford line connects Clyde on the western line to Carlingford.

To south and south west:

  • Eastern suburbs and Illawara line - use it if you want to go to Cronulla or Bondi Junction. Or you could visit the South Coast, down to Kiama and Nowra, via the South Coast route.

  • Airport and East Hills connects City to Sydney airport and then goes down to Macarthur.

  • Inner West - covers a large number of suburbs close to the city and goes to Liverpool in the south.

  • Bankstown line - links some inner west suburbs to Liverpool via a more southern route.

  • South line goes down to Campbelltown and then links further to Southern Highlands, heading to Mittagong, Bowral and Goulbourn.

  • Cumberland line connects Blacktown in the west to Campbelltown in the south west.
