We spent a great weekend in Canberra to see the Renaissance exhibition at the National Gallery. It has paintings from the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo, Italy. If you plan to visit the capital of Australia you can see them up to April 9.
The Renaissance exhibition was our initial goal but we ended up doing more.
We joined a guided tour of the Australian War Memorial and discovered some hidden treasures of the memorial, saw the sound and light shows in the ANZAC hall, which included a documentary by Peter Jackson (the director of the Lord of the Rings) and listened to a piper who played at the closing ceremony of the museum. There is a closing ceremony every day.
The next thing to do was have dinner at one of the many eateries around London Circuit, in Canberra's centre. But try finding a parking spot on a Saturday night in a city that many think is empty after business hours. It is not. Every Canberran and their dog was out there, driving around the parking lots while running an envious eye over the early birds who were already enjoying the alfresco dining. Who thought Canberra can be so crowded at night?
On Sunday, before exiting Canberra for the highway back to Sydney we found a real gem, Cockington Green Gardens, a miniature village with beautiful replicas of buildings and sites mainly from England. There is an international section too. Scroll down this page to see some of the pictures we took. Hover your mouse over the thumbnails to see them in a larger size.
Visiting Cockington Green is really one of the top things to do in Canberra.
